WASHINGTON – Low-income students who attend urban public high schools generally do just as well as private-school students with similar backgrounds, according to a study being released Wednesday.
Students at independent private schools and most parochial schools scored the same on 12th-grade achievement tests in core academic subjects as those in traditional public high schools when income and other family characteristics were taken into account, according to the study by the nonpartisan Center on Education Policy.

the cons support giving government (i.e. taxpayer) money to people that “choose to opt out” of the public education system…
but vehemently oppose universal health care for needy children.
figure that one out.
We need to stop modeling our schools after factories and prisons and make them run like a corporation (however, you can not entirely apply capitalist notions to an essentially socialist function).
We also need to listen to the good teachers and stop forcing them out with all this high stakes testing. The people who end up staying are the mediocre and bad teachers.
The one story that you found about this does not prove your point. This is one school system. How do other parts of the country fair?
Where I live, the public schools don’t hold a candle to the private when it comes to Ohio standardized tests, graduation rates, and % of students going for advanced education.

Again, attending a Catholic religious order school had a positive effect on the math scores.
So do catholic schools better prepare our children for the real world?
For spleenwater: To correct your misrepresentation, the conservatives want to give the people THEIR OWN MONEY BACK to send their children to a school that they believe will actually educate them, as opposed to paying taxes so that the public school can brainwash their children into thinking “U.S. = BAD!, WORLD = GOOD!”, or that they came from apes.
excuse me but i went to a public school and the teachers didnt help me one bit! they got money from the government but where they spent it it didnt go toward the education of students
when i had questions no teacher helped me
now i go to a catholic all girl school and teachers care more and help me!
